Hello there! Jonas here. 2017 has already been a strong movie year. Right off the bat we got Logan, Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and more. As we began to see last yer, this year is full to the brim with blockbusters, the huge movies everybody is going to go see, and you know what? Most of them don’t look half bad. I thought today I would share a quick top 5 list of my most anticipated movies of the upcoming year:
It certainly looks like director Ridley Scott is taking the Alien franchise back to its roots with Alien: Covenant. It’s nice to see specifically the word, “Alien”, being used in the title once again, as the last series installment was the spinoff titled Prometheus. I personally am excited to see the classic xenomorph aliens brought to life using current technology, surely making them scarier and even more effective than the 70s sci-fi horror masterpiece. Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Danny McBride, and Noomi Repace, among others, and is out this month.
Christopher Nolan is back this year! Having last directed the space exploration drama Interstellar of 2014, fans are crossing their fingers that Dunkirk, a film set in World War I, will continue Nolan streak of epic, visually spectacular, mind bending cinema. What makes this film even more interesting, is that it’s been a long time since Christopher Nolan has directed a film set in the real world, and has never covered a historical event. Nonetheless, I have faith in his ability to bring weight and gripping action and emotion to this story. Dunkirk come out at the end of this month of May and stars Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, and more.
As the 16th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and as a film about a character already done twice before, Spider-Man: Homecoming has a lot to live up to. With the addition of some revered characters like Iron Man, and villain The Vulture, as well as a brief cameo in last years Captain America: Winter Soldier, Marvel has not failed to drum up excitement for yet another rendition of the beloved comic book web-slinger.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle:
Matthew Vaughn is at it again with the second installment in what is hopefully a sold, Kingsman trilogy. Kingsman: The Secret Service came out in 2014 and was an adaptation of a none-too-well-known comic book series. The ultra-violent, crudely humorous, hilarious, and touching story of a secret order of British spies quickly became a movie I can rewatch any time and never get tired of it. The sequel, so far, looks no less appealing and includes characters played by new-to-the-cast Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry, Julianne Moore, and Channing Tatum. The movie comes out this September!
Murder on the Orient Express:
I remember both reading the Agatha Christie classic, and watching the 1974 film in high school. I thoroughly enjoy the book, and I think a fresh take by acclaimed British stage actor Kenneth Branagh is past due! One can only hope that the same quirky, creepy, mysterious feel will be kept and amplified for this film, which stars Johnny Depp, Star Wars star Daisy Ridley, and Michelle Pfeiffer, and comes out November 10th.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi:
Personally, Im not sure what could be more exciting than a new Star Wars movie. Hype is building, especially since Disney released a teaser trailer for this movie about a month ago, showcasing plot points and visuals that already have Star Wars fans’ blood pumping. This film continues the story of Rey, Finn, Poe from 2015s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As the last film starred Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fischer, the second installment looks to more heavily involve Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, which, depending on what the role entails, could break, or very much make, this film. Director Rian Johnson’s Star-Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and many others. Coming to you December 15th.
So there you have it! Among many, many others, that’s my top 5 most anticipated movies for the upcoming year. We’re looking at a year brimming with huge blockbusters, here’s to a better summer season than last year! A full list of 2017 films can be found here. What are you excited for?
